4. In Absentia
   (Reinterpretation)

Photography series, 2021Palestinian Kuwaiti photographer Tarek Al-Ghoussein has long been an inspiration and a direct influence on my work. His monograph, “In Absentia” (2009), a collection of series of works from 2003—2009, explores his identification with the anonymous landscapes he depicts, inserting himself into these scapes to depict the searching for a place of belonging as a Palestinian in the region.
“In Absentia (Reinterpretation)” aims to explore a complex relationship between the Palestinian diaspora identity, as well as the Khaleej migrant. Themes of displacement, wandering, and isolation were what I captured throughout. I aimed to shoot these landscapes that are present in my daily surroundings between Sharjah and Abu Dhabi, inserting myself in a performative manner attempting to interact with, or fit in, my setting, and my state of mind during.

This project was initiated in the VIS221 Photography Basics course at the American University of Sharjah in 2021, mentored by Vikram Divecha. Special thanks to the late Tarek Al-Ghoussein himself for his generous input and feedback throughout. May he rest in peace.
