2. Do Concrete Towers
   Dream of Golden Visas?

Photo-series, sculptural series & research publication, 2023—ongoing    “Do Concrete Towers Dream of Golden Visas?” documents and archives self- and community-identified sites in a variety of conditions in various Abu Dhabi neighborhoods. This is in order to self-preserve these currently unprotected buildings before their potential disappearance. The sculptural component of the project reconstructs four key sites through paper interventions on concrete that narrates the lived experiences of one Abu Dhabi resident’s story.
This is not only to reveal the ephemeral nature of Abu Dhabi’s built environment, but to argue that the value of a building is inseparable from the collective memory of the population; thus, proposing an addition to the current list of protected sites. This is achieved through fervent objective photo-documentation, as well as through embedding the subjective, intangible lived experiences within the tangible material of the place itself.

This project was initiated in the VIS405 Senior Design Studio course at the American University of Sharjah in 2023, mentored by Professor Riem Ibrahim.
